Introducing Shaolin Monk, Shi Yan He, who after residency in the Shaolin Temple in Sydney, returned to China in 2022. I continue to train with him on-line.
For over 3,000 years the sword (jian) has been seen not just as a weapon but as an instrument of exercise, refinement and art. The intrinsic nature in all these disciplines being connected to its martial arts background. The sword master seeks to develop a ‘living calm’ reacting from the heart rather than the mind. This calmness and centring, once mastered, can bring great strength to one’s personality and essence. Like Chinese brushwork, the sword creates its own calligraphy in the air.
“One who wields a sword,
Reveals his emptiness to an opponent,
Gives him an advantageous opening,
Makes his move after him,
Arrives before him.”
